Thor or Star Lord? Avengers Infinity War directors discuss whose fault led to Thanos’ finger snap

Avengers Infinity War was the most successful superhero movie of recent times, the biggest one perhaps in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. So, it is not a surprise when every tiny detail about the film is now being discussed to bits. Especially the incidents that led to the climax when Thanos snapped his fingers and made half the universe’s population disappear.

In a recent interview to Comicbook.com, the director of Infinity War, the Russo brothers discussed whose fault was it anyway -- Thor (Chris Hemsworth) or Star Lord (Chris Pratt). In a moment of hatred and to get revenge, Thor swings the axe and hits Thanos in the chest, but had he aimed for the head, he may have been able to save the day. Speaking about Thor, Joe Russo said, “I think he’s been on a very complicated journey where he struggles with his ability to feel worthy and be worthy. In a lot of ways, he is the driving hero’s arc of the movie which stands in direct opposition to Thanos’ argument.”

Similarly, when Star Lord learns the truth behind Gamora’s death, he loses his temper and just when Iron Man, Doctor Strange and Spider Man are about to get the gauntlet away from Thanos, he lets his temper rule the moment and the superheroes miss their chance. The fans, however, outraged more against Star Lord because that was a frustrating moment to watch for audiences as well.

Speaking about this, Joe said, “I would argue that the fan base could be equally upset with Thor, who chose to throw that ax into Thanos chest and not his head. Because he wanted to tell Thanos that he got his revenge. Had he gone for a kill shot, that snap would not have happened.”

According to Joe Russo, the thing that fans need to learn from these decisions is to respect the character’s stand on why they did what they did and empathise with them. He said, “These are choices that characters who are feeling immense pain make and hopefully, the audience can learn to empathize with those characters because they can grow through stories. Stories can teach us things and that we should try to see every choice from the perspective of the character that made the choice.”
