HYDERABAD: Latest water quality analysis carried out by Telangana State Pollution Control Board (TSPCB) shows how most water bodies, including several lakes and tanks within city limits, are highly polluted.

As per reports, Pedda Cheruvu, Nalla Cheruvu, Noor Md Kunta, Pragathinagar Cheruvu, Hasmathpet lake, Banjara lake and Amber Cheruvu in Kukatpally have recorded high biochemical oxygen demand (BOD).

All these water bodies recorded biochemical oxygen demand content greater than 14mg/l, while Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) classifies water bodies with a BOD content higher than 6mg/l to be ‘polluted’.

The water flow in many water bodies such as Hussainsagar, Kapra Cheruvu, Durgam Cheruvu and Langar Houz lake have now been classified as ‘stagnated’.

Most of the lakes surveyed have also recorded a dissolved oxygen (DO) content higher than 4mg/l, thus indicating that aquatic life cannot survive in those water bodies.

“Sewage is the main cause of pollution of lakes in the city, as is indicated by presence of faecal coliform in the water.

“Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) authorities must ensure that sewage does not find its way into water bodies. Sewage treatment plants are only able to handle close to 50% of the total sewage generated in the twin cities,” said a former scientist of TSPCB.
