The accused is carrying a reward of ₹50,000 on his head

A sub-inspector from Uttar Pradesh Crime Branch was injured after a criminal opened fire at police team during a raid in north Delhi’s Timarpur on Saturday morning, the police said.

Jaiveer Singh was shot in his right leg, they said, adding that he underwent a surgery at a private hospital in Ghaziabad’s Vaishali.

He is said to be out of danger.

The accused, Shahnawaz alias Tunda, was wanted by the UP police in half a dozen cases of extortion, attempt to murder, and firing, all registered at various police stations in Meerut and nearby areas, the police said.

The UP police had announced a reward of ₹50,000 on his arrest a few months ago.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (North) Nupur Prasad said the firing took place when a ten-member crime branch team from UP reached Sanjay Basti in Timarpur to arrest Shahnawaz. They had got a tip-off stating that he was hiding in a house that was arranged by a local lawyer, Mahesh Chandra. She said that the informer from UP police team was unaware of the exact address where the accused was hiding and the accused managed to flee the spot.

While the raiding team was looking for the house, a man spotted the cops and alerted Shahnawaz, who then opened fire at them, Ms. Prasad said.

The UP police team said they went for recce in the area when the criminal opened fire on them without any provocation.

Case registered

“We have registered a case of attempt to murder and firing on a public servant during duty. The lawyer will be booked for providing a safe shelter and harbouring a wanted criminal,” said Ms. Prasad.
