Newborn rescued from storm-water drain in Chennai on Independence Day


A shocking video is doing rounds on social media where it is seen that a newborn baby was stuck in a storm-water drain, the baby was rescued by a resident in Valasaravakkam in Chennai in the early hours on Wednesday.

The incident took place on Wednesday when the entire country was celebrating Independence Day, a milkman was delivering supplies in the morning heard cries of a baby crying, and alerted a resident named Geetha, reported The Hindu. In the video it is seen that Geetha is rescuing the baby and removed the umbilical cord around his neck, it is also seen that the baby was covered in dirt.

Later Geetha informed the police, who then took the baby to a hospital. She also named the baby  Swathanthiram, meaning freedom in Tamil. She also has said that she would like to adopt the baby. The baby boy was taken Chinna Porur, from where he was shifted to the Institute of Child Health in Egmore. The baby is still said to be in the incubator. “It does not appear to be a birth in a hospital. We are carrying out an investigation. We will be taking strict action against the parents once we find them”, U Muthuraja, law and order inspector of Valsaravakkam police station told The Hindu.
