The possibility of contagious diseases spreading in relief camps has put the Health Department on alert. A central medical cell has been set up with the help of the Indian Medical Association to monitor the situation in the camps.
The waterlogging could lead to the spread of leptospirosis, while there are also chances of other water-borne diseases such as diarrhoea, jaundice and typhoid. Those in the camps have been asked to let the health workers who visit the camps know of any health issues they had and to be ready to be shifted to a health centre if they contacted contagious diseases. They have also been advised to take medicines to prevent leptospirosis.
The residents of camps have been advised not to step into water if they had wounds on their legs and to use footwear all the time. They have been advised to take their regular medicines if any and to let health workers know if they needed fresh supplies.
