Man gets life sentence for setting wife on fire

Additional Sessions Judge Sanjay Agarwal awarded life imprisonment to Ram Singh Sengar, a resident of Transport Nagar who was accused of killing his wife by setting her on fire.

The judge also imposed fine on him for tampering with the evidences. The judge found him guilty under IPC section 302 and others while sentencing him to life imprisonment. The woman in her dying declaration had accused her husband of burning her alive.

According to prosecution, the couple was married in 1992 and has three children. According to Pankaj Paliwal, the District Attorney, Ram Singh Sengar was an alcoholic and used to have frequent quarrels with his wife over his addiction.

When his wife objected to his drinking on February 1 of this year, the enraged accused poured kerosene on her and set her ablaze around 10 in the night.

The wife was rushed to a hospital with 90 per cent burn injuries and in critical condition where she gave her statement before the Naib Tehsildar and the Head Constable of the Behodapur police station before succumbing to the burn injuries. After the incident, the accused hide the can in which the kerosene was kept, the matches used to set her on fire and other burnt items before fleeing from the house. A case was registered in the Behodapur police station and a special police team was formed to nab the culprit. The man who was later on arrested confessed to the crime.

Though there weren’t any eye witnesses the court held the man guilty on the basis of the dying declaration of the woman.

 Even while the accused pleaded for mercy on the grounds that he has children to take care of, the judge, taking into account the gravity of the crime awarded him the life imprisonment.
