Heavy rain forecast in isolated regions

With rain staying away for most parts of the day and water receding from flooded regions, the Meteorological department on Friday withdrew the red alert that was in force in the district. Since there is a possibility of heavy rain in isolated regions, a yellow alert has been declared.

A total of 7,879 people from 2,347 families were shifted to 83 relief camps in the district, following the floods. Food and medical aid were made available in all the camps.

The most number of people were shifted in the Thiruvananthapuram taluk, which was the worst-hit. Thirty-seven relief camps were opened in the taluk, with 3,058 people from 872 families staying in these. In the Neyyattinkara taluk, 17 camps have been opened, with 2,667 people staying in them.

In Kattakkada, out of the 11 camps, four were closed down on Friday afternoon, as people returned to their homes. Now, 499 people are staying in these seven camps.

In Nedumangadu taluk, 11 relief camps are functioning, with 654 people staying in them. In Varkala taluk, 128 people are staying in three camps. Those rescued from Aranmula are staying in the Sivagiri convention centre. In Chirayinkeezh taluk, 873 people are staying in eight relief camps.

The District Collector has asked the owners of trucks and tourist buses in the districts to make available their vehicles for relief work, when required, considering the emergency situation.
