The Tamil Nadu government declared a holiday on August 17 for all educational institutions, offices of the State government and State public sector undertakings and government-controlled bodies, as a mark of respect to former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee.
A government order said treasuries would work with skeleton staff.

Another circular from the Public Department said that a State mourning would be observed throughout the State for seven days as a mark of respect to the departed leader. The national flag would be flown at half mast and there would not be any official entertainment during this period, it added.
