PUNE: Monsoon activity was weak, active or normal in 33 sub-divisions of India on Friday but three sub-divisions — Madhya
Maharashtra,
Marathwada and Kerala — were the only ones to witness a 'vigorous' performance from Thursday till Friday morning.
At least 47 locations in the state recorded over 100mm rain till Friday morning, with Marathwada followed by Madhya Maharashtra reporting the highest number.
A K Srivastava, head of climate monitoring and analysis at India Meteorological Department (IMD), Pune, told TOI that Thursday’s depression over south
Chhattisgarh and adjoining Vidarbha— which caused the heavy rains in parts of the state till Friday— has moved west-northwestwards and weakened into a well-marked low pressure area over southwest Madhya Pradesh, adjoining
Gujarat and north Madhya Maharashtra on August 17.
“Rainfall activity in the state could dip from August 18 onwards. However, another system may form over the Bay of Bengal around August 19. The track and movement of this system will determine how the monsoon will fare in the state,” he added.
The met department has forecast only light to moderate rain in most districts in the state for the next few days.
Meanwhile, Skymet Weather
Services sources said though the system has now weakened to a well-marked low pressure, it might still be capable of giving moderate to heavy rains over parts of the state.
Parts of north Madhya Maharashtra may receive moderate to heavy rain for another 24 hours from Friday. The intensity would be more over the northern half of Konkan for another 24 hours. Rainfall may diminish over Marathwada and
Vidarbha, they said.
