BENGALURU: A loud bang across west and south Bengaluru on Thursday afternoon triggered panic as residents ran out of their homes suspecting an earthquake. However, the Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Centre (KSNDMC) denied reports of a quake in the region.

People in Rajarajeshwari Nagar, Banashankari, JP Nagar and Jayanagar were startled by a thunderous noise between 3pm and 4pm. Some even said it sounded like a massive explosion and that they also felt the tremors. With the news spreading like wildfire, people started running out of their homes in fear.

“There were complaints from people in west Bengaluru and other parts about a loud noise, possibly caused due to an earthquake. However, no such tremors have been recorded in our earthquake observatory at Thippagondanahalli along Magadi Road, which monitors such events, if any, in 100km radius,” said a media communication from KSNDMC. Experts from the centre said they are examining the cause behind the phenomenon.

Meyyappan Sundararajulu, 48, a resident of RR Nagar told TOI: “Around 3.45pm, we heard a loud noise at our apartment followed by vibrations for a couple of seconds. It felt as if the building was shaking. Some construction workers living nearby too ran out of their huts,” he said.

Said Rachana Sandeep, a resident of RBI Layout, JP Nagar VI Stage: “I heard a noise in the afternoon. It was akin to a huge explosion in granite quarries.”
