AHMEDABAD: A 32-year-old woman complained to the city police on Wednesday that she was tortured by her husband and in-laws for not bringing sufficient
dowry, for her
buckteeth and dark complexion, and for her birth in a small town.
According to the
FIR lodged with the Mahila West police station of the city, the woman, who hails from Anand town, got married in April last year to a man from Ahmedabad. “My husband and in-laws treated me properly for the first 15 days after the marriage. But later they started picking up quarrels over petty issues,” stated the complainant.
The complainant said she was often denied food and tortured as her in-laws alleged her father hadn’t paid them sufficient dowry.
“My mother-in-law taunted me by saying that I do not belong to a rich family, and I have dark complexion and buckteeth,” said the complainant. She said that she was also taunted over how she dressed.
The woman alleged that when she used to raise the issues with her husband, he did not pay any heed.
“On April 5, my husband and in-laws asked me to give them a sedan car in dowry. But as I refused I was thrown out of their house. Since then, I am living with my parents and despite several attempts to strike a compromise, my husband and in-laws did not accept me,” the complainant stated.
The police have registered a case against the husband and in-laws of the complainant under IPC sections 498-A (dowry harassment) 294-B (uttering obscene words) and 114 (abetment).
