Accordingly, Tamil Nadu Skill Development Corporation (TNSDC), which has been intrusted to take up the survey, will identify specific developmental initiatives that have impact on employment generation taking into account the aspirations of the youth. 

The findings will also identify the sector wise current and future (next 10 years) skill and manpower requirements by industry, and the existing and projected skill gaps. 

"Tamil Nadu is one of the leading states in terms of demographic dividend, with approximately 66% of the population lying in the working age group. However, this dividend is expected to be exhausted over the next decade on account of a stable birth rate. The shortfall in the availability of skilled human resources is expected to reach 3.6 lakh workers at the semi-skilled level and 2.25 lakhs at the skilled level by 2022," a senior official from TNSDC said on Thursday. 

The official said the survey team will identify developmental opportunities on the basis of skill gap availability and sector specific demand with respect to 400 samples in each district covering not less than six blocks. 

The survey will identify the skill gap in 38 sectors including agriculture, IT, automotive, electronics among others in each district and state level by collecting and analysing data with regard to the available skill force and the required skill force. 

The survey team will also find why Women Industrial Training Institutes (ITIs) have higher dropouts, lower enrolment rates and lower placements compared to other ITIs in the State. 

With the Tamil Nadu skill development mission acting as the nodal agency for all skill development initiatives in the state, the survey will improve targeting and consolidation  of efforts is likely over the next few years.
