BHUBANESWAR: India Post will release a postage stamp to commemorate 75 years of Utkal University, the oldest university of the state. A proposal in this regard was approved by the Union ministry of communications and technology, official sources said.

Santosh Kumar Kamila, chief post master general (CPMG), Bhubaneswar region, confirmed this on Thursday. He said the university, which is the proposer of the initiative, will come up with a date to issue the stamp.

"The university will decide the date of the release of the postage stamp. The proposal was approved on August 10 by the ministry, but it takes time to communicate with the regional office," said Kamila.

Asoka Kumar Das, vice chairman of Odisha State Higher Education Council and former vice chancellor of Utkal University, said the proposal was given about two years ago to the ministry of communications and technology through the India Post.

He said Vani Vihar Alumni Batch of 1992 had first mooted the idea three years back. "Sanjaya Acharya, a professor of the university, had sculpted the proposal. We wanted to make the platinum jubilee celebration special, so we had given the proposal," he added.

The university will conduct a series of programmes this year to mark its 75th foundation year. The university established on November 27, 1943, is the 17th oldest university in India. It will conduct programmes including seminars, workshops, lectures, sports meet, literary meets and cultural function to celebrate the platinum jubilee.
