Cape Town - SuperSport rugby commentator Ethienne Reynecke is recovering well after suffering a stroke last week.

The 36-year-old was rushed to a Durban hospital last Thursday and was in a critical condition after developing a blood clot on the brain.

On Tuesday, Reynecke was taken out of ICU and into the neurology ward where he was kept under heavy sedation while doctors waited for medication to take effect on the blood clot.

He showed improvements on Wednesday when he was said to be communicating and recognising family members.

The latest update on Reynecke is positive and on Thursday he was speaking to friends and family. Doctors are keen to get him out of the neurology ward soon and it appears as though no operation is required.

Reynecke played mainly for the Lions in South Africa, but also had brief stints at Western Province and Free State.

He also played for Saracens in England, Connacht in Ireland and Pau in France.

After retiring from rugby, Reynecke turned his focus to mixed martial arts.

A lifelong WWE fan, in late 2017 Reynecke worked out at the WWE Performance Centre in Orlando, Florida.

In recent times, he has worked as an Afrikaans rugby commentator for SuperSport.
