BENGALURU: The manager of the Indira Canteen in Gayathri Nagar (ward 76) has filed a complaint with Subramanyanagar police, accusing a corporator’s husband of placing a dead rat in the vessel from which sambar was served by the canteen.
On August 11, a rat was found in the sambar served to pourakarmikas at Gayathri Nagar ward office. The sambar was prepared in the Malleswaram kitchen run by ChefTalk, one of the two caterers tasked with preparing and serving food at 188 Indira Canteens in the city.

The manager, Balamurugan, suspected the hand of Girish Lekanna, husband of corporator Chandrakala, and filed a complaint against him and another unknown person on Saturday.

“After the pourakarmikas finished eating, I got to know that someone had placed a dead rat in the sambar. This despite our manager having inspected the food at the ward office earlier and not finding anything. We even sent the food prepared at the kitchen for a lab test, and the sample was found to be ‘good’. I suspected Lekanna as he had been calling us for the past two weeks, saying he was the corporator and wanted to meet and talk to our managing director. However, I told him that our MD was only concerned with preparing clean food and not interacting with corporators,” said Balamurugan in his FIR. The complainant believes the rat was placed to tarnish ChefTalk. BBMP commissioner Manjunatha Prasad said: “ No one should indulge in such activities. I’ve asked the police commissioner to investigate the matter.”

Subramanyanagar police have registered a case under section 272 of IPC (adulteration of food or drink intended for sale) .
