Leopards willing to forfeit away games due to budget cut

2018-08-16 12:26

Cape Town - The Leopards have indicated that they intent to forfeit the points in some of their Currie Cup First Division away matches due to financial constraints.

According to Netwerk24, the Leopards are considering not travelling for their away matches against Namibia, Border and Eastern Province.

The Potchefstroom-based union indicated that this was due to SA Rugby’s recent decision to cut the budgets of smaller unions by 52%.

The Leopards say they don’t have the money to cover all the travel expenses for the Currie Cup First Division, which runs from August 24 until October 13.

The Leopards earlier this year also made the decision to move away from their 98-year-old Olën Park home stadium.

Leopards CEO Andries de Kock said the decision was made due to safety issues.

“We can’t obtain a security certificate which by law is a requirement,” De Kock said in April.

He added that necessary maintenance was needed on the stands and there was no money to do so.

The Leopards now play their home matches at the Fanie du Toit Sports Ground, which is the home venue of the North West University's rugby team, Pukke, who play in the Varsity Cup.
