NEW DELHI: A 55-year-old woman and her nephew died and her son was seriously injured after being attacked by the woman’s brother-in-law with a hoe, following an argument over property, in Pahargunj on Wednesday.
Police said that the accused, Rajkumar, had earlier stabbed a shopkeeper in the locality and was recently released from jail.
The incident was reported late on Wednesday night, when Rajkumar went to the police station and surrendered a hoe and a knife and told cops about the murders.
A police team from the Pahargunj police station went to the house at Kaseruwalan and found Kaushalya’s nephew Purushottam lying on the bed with his throat slit. Kaushalya and her son Rohit were taken to a hospital by her tenants, where she was declared dead on arrival.
“We have registered a
murder case. The accused said he killed Kaushalya — his brother’s widow — for her property and attacked her nephew (brother’s son) as he tried to save Kaushalya,” said DCP (central) Mandeep Singh Randhawa.
Purushottam came to visit his aunt to help her with some property documents. He was supposed to return on Thursday morning.
The house in which the family stayed belonged to Kaushalya’s father-in-law, two floors of which was rented out. On Wednesday afternoon, Kaushalya had an argument with Rajkumar during which Purushottam allegedly thrashed him for misbehaving with his aunt.
Kaushalya’s husband
Om Prakash died a few years back, after which she had been taking care of the property. Prakash’s mother and youngest brother Tarachand also used to stay with Kaushalya. Probe revealed that Rajkumar was involved in a dispute with Kaushalya over the property.
