Punjab Roadways Transport to destroy its 295 salvage buses. Punjab Roadways Transport is going to give new look to erase old proverbs ‘roadways di lari, na koyee sheesha na koyee bari ‘(Roadways bus, having no glass, no gates). It is going to destroy its 299 salvage buses in the first phase, which have crossed their age, but still running on the road. Sources in the department told that there are 598 buses in the Punjab Roadways, which are to be destroyed phase-by-phase. After the removals of these salvage buses, new buses will be replaced. Talking to Daily Post, Minister for Transport Aruna Chaudhry told that the Government has planned to purchase 100 more buses in the fleet to PUNBUS.
At present, there are 1848 buses in the fleet of Punjab Roadways and PUNBUS. In the meeting the transport ministry, the Chief Minister had directed to replace, which have complete its age. A bus lasts for 7 years or run about 5.5 lacs kilometre in its life. Rs 17 lacs was the rate to purchase the new bus, few years ago, but now the rate is more than 20 lacs for ordinary bus, while good-nought bus is sold in Rs1.75 lacs to Rs 2.25 lacs in auction. The new buses, which have been included in the fleet, are with latest modern equipment like GPS, Panic button, public address system, ladies reserve seats, pneumatic doors, seating capacity and leg spacing, but without hanger.
