Police are investigating an incident in which community members in Daveyton, Benoni allegedly set a suspected gangster alight on Wednesday in an area near to a high school.
Gauteng MEC for Education Panyaza Lesufi is expected to visit Unity Secondary School on Friday.
Spokesperson for the education department Steve Mabona said the community went on a rampage and set the man alight in an area next to the school.
"It is alleged that members of the community disrupted schooling when they dragged the suspected gang member to the school to point out a [pupil] who is alleged to be part of the gang. Upon not finding the [pupil], the gang member tried to escape but was accosted by the community in full view of [pupils]."
The gang is suspected of committing horrendous crimes in Daveyton, including robbery and murder.
"The alleged gang member is currently recovering in hospital after sustaining burn wounds," Mabona said.
Lesufi condemned the disruption of schooling and urged the community to "remain calm and allow the law to take its course".
"Schools are centres of teaching and learning. They should be treated as such," he said.
Police spokesperson Brigadier Mathapelo Peters said there was heightened visibility in the area.
"Police are appealing to anyone who might have witnessed the incident to assist with information towards the arrest of the perpetrators."
