Motor trade sales increased by 5.0% year-on-year (y/y) in June 2018 measured in current prices, Statistics SA said on Thursday when it released its preliminary motor trade sales for June 2018.
The largest annual growth rates were recorded for fuel sales (20.8%) and convenience store sales (5.5%).
Seasonally adjusted motor trade sales increased by 2.3% in June 2018 compared with May 2018. This followed month-on-month (m/m) changes of 3.8% in May 2018 and -8.6% in April 2018.
In the second quarter of 2018, seasonally adjusted motor trade sales decreased by 2.2% compared with the previous quarter.
Motor trade sales increased by 4.6% in the second quarter of 2018 compared with the second quarter of 2017. The main contributors were fuel sales (13.8%) and used vehicle sales (2.8%).
