30 houses damaged in Udupi

As many as 30 houses were damaged in rain accompanied by winds in Udupi district on Wednesday. However, when compared to Tuesday, the intensity of rain has come down.

According to the information provided by the district administration here, the loss due to damage to the 30 houses in the district has been put at ₹ 13.02 lakh.

As many as 11 houses were damaged in Brahmavar taluk and the loss has been estimated at ₹ 1.63 lakh.

Nine houses were damaged in Kundapur taluk and the loss has been estimated at ₹ 3.9 lakh.

As many as seven houses were damaged in Udupi taluk and the loss in all has been estimated at ₹ 6.64 lakh.

Two houses were damaged in Karkala taluk and the loss has been estimated at ₹ 50,000. A house was damaged at Ulloor in Byndoor taluk and the loss estimated at ₹ 35,000.

Assistant Commissioner T. Bhoobalan said that about 40 persons were evacuated near Kota village after the Varahi subsidiary canal overflowed and there was water logging.

But after the water receded in about two hours, people went back to their homes, he said.

Meanwhile, the body of a person, Shankar Poojary, who was washed away in the Varahi canal in Siddapur on Tuesday, was traced and recovered on Wednesday.

Deputy Director of Fisheries P. Parshwanath said that a deep sea trawler, Vishwas, which was stranded in the sea 35 nautical miles off Surathkal coast for the last three days, was rescued by the Coast Guard and all the crew members on board are safe.

In the last 24 hours ended at 8.30 a.m. on Wednesday, Udupi received 109.4 mm rainfall, while Kundapur and Karkala towns received 74.8 mm and 150.1 mm, respectively.
