Lalji Tandon, former BJP MP from Lucknow, and a long-time associate of Atal Bihari Vajpayee, spoke to Prabodh Krishna of BW Businessworld
How I remember Atal Ji is something that cannot be described or expressed in words. All of us, as party people, as his religious followers, feel pained at his passing away. And why only us! The entire nation is feeling the same pain with his demise. He has always been a torch-bearer of the nation and its identity. Such an icon has departed. The vacuum created by his demise cannot be filled. It is a void for every Indian. There are people who create memories but he created history. There are so many things that I have learnt merely from his company that it is difficult to limit it in words, it is a day to pay him homage.
He was and will always be a legend. He was such a multidimensional personality. We lost him as well as the nation lost him. I remember from early day of politics to my entire political career he has always been a true guide to me and to anyone who met with him. It is a great loss indeed for the entire nation.
When someone very close to you departs, you never have words to speak about the kind of pain and sorrow you feel. He was a true guide and he was multidimensional as well. I don’t know how to confine his legendary personality in words. All I can say is that, I have never seen such a person before.
You cannot and will never be able to find a single person be it from any domain of society who has criticised Vajpayee’s personality. In fact, in my entire political life, I have not come across any person who had ever criticised him like any other political leader. He always had cordial relations with everyone.
Everyone reflects his multidimensional personality. He was master of so many arts as well as a great administrator and a very humble and magnanimous human being. In fact, you can’t find a man who has not made good remarks about Vajpayee’s personality. Nationally or internationally, I have never come across one such person.
I can only say that he was a true leader and none can ever find a leader who is not criticised by his opponents. This was the charisma of Atal Bihari Vajpayee. He was a soft human being, a great mentor, a great poet, and even a greater statesman. He was a legend.
