Kochi, The death toll in the rain fury since August 8 climbed to 95 including 28 persons lost their lives in devastating rain that wreak havoc during the past 48 hours in Kerala.
In a major landslide reported at Kuranchery, near Wadakkanchery in Thrissur district, nine people were buried alive, while 11 people were rescued and one still missing.
In Cheruthuruthi, three people were missing in a landslide reported from there.As the flood situation in the state became worsen in the history of the state, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan has once again called Prime Minister Narendra Modi and sought additional army personal and helicopters for evacuation and rescue people who stranded in water logged areas.
Since the rain continued, the KSEB authorities forced to open 35 dams of total 39 dams in the state.Meanwhile, Southern Railway has suspended the train services from Thiruvananthapuram as water was logged on railway tracks. Besides this, the road traffic was also suspended between Aluva and Chalakkudy and between Thrissur and Guruvayoor on National Highway as the water level went up in these areas.
The Cochin Metro also suspended its services following heavy rain being experienced in Eranakulam district. Low lying areas in the district were virtually submerged under water.
The Cochin International Airport had already suspended both the domestic and international flight operations from the airport due to the heavy rain, resulting the water level went up in the nearby areas as well as its operational areas.
Red alert had been declared in all the 14 districts in the state as the situation become worse because of the non stop torrential rain during the past three days and the government declared holiday to all educational institutions in view of the heavy rain and flooding at almost in all places in the state.
Because of the rain and landslides in the high range districts of Wayanad and Idukki it was virtually isolated.Because of the landslide at Kuthiran on Thrissur-Coimbatore road the vehicular traffic was disrupted. Mud Mound fell on lorries and a car, in which one person lost his life.
The water level in Idukki (Cheruthoni) dam went up to 2401.82 feet, while the water level of the Mullaperiyar dam up to to 142 feet, the maximum storing level.
