In a state where politics and movies have been inextricasbly interlinked for decades, it is no surprise that a slew of actor-politician have entered the fray to attempt to take the mantle forward from the likes of Jayalalithaa and Karunanidhi. Kamal Haasan and Rajinikanth being the latest. But are they prepared?

Haasan announced his entry into politics last year and formed the Makkal Needhi Maiam in February this year. He has since taken a very confusing stance on whether he will continue his acting career alongside his fledging political career, emulating MGR. He has worked on movies while simultaneously juggling his responsibility with Makkal Needhi Maiam and attempted to establish a political base.
His latest film, Viswaroopam 2, hit the theatres in the run up to Independence Day. The film came under some scrutiny for its theme and Kamal’s outspoken avatar as a politician.
While it surpassed those hurdles to be released across the globe, a decision by the actor may not have gone down too well with moviegoers.
The beginning of the film is preceded by a rousing theme song for Kamal Haasan’s party, Makkal Needhi Maiam. This has left the audience flummoxed, with some even vocally deriding the promotion.
Reaction on social media has ranged from ridicule to dismay that fans and audience alike would be subject to such propaganda, in addition to the government’s paeans that are customary during the interval.
With some members of the audience claiming to have even walked out after the song aired prior to the movie, perhaps a more creative approach to marrying politics and movies is expected from arguably one of the more creative minds of the film industry.
