The way forward for colleges to remain relevant in engineering education is to run the institutions professionally, say professors.
Even colleges in Chennai region have taken a beating in the ongoing Tamil Nadu Engineering Admission counselling session.
For instance, a college in Kancheepuram which had shifted focus to academics over training, has lost out in placements. It has subsequently seen its admissions dip drastically this year.
This is because of increased focus on academics at the cost of training students for the fluctuating job market.
“It goes to show that we have to develop our institutions like the university, if we want to attract students. Some of the reputed colleges have had to contend with lower cut-offs despite their reputation. Every management has to change its attitude and reframe their policies,” said S. Rajkumar of Rajalakshmi Engineering College.
Anna University has announced that registration of online applications for supplementary counselling would be held from August 16 to 20. Rhymend Uthariaraj.

Candidates can participate in this counselling only after their original certificates are verified. Further details will be made available in Anna University’s website, he said.
