Sluices of six dams in the Nilgiris opened

Following heavy rain in the Nilgiris, the sluices of the Kundah, Upper Bhavani, Avalanche, Pykara and Glenmorgan dams were opened on Tuesday.

Speaking to The Hindu, S. Ragu, Superintending Engineer, Kundah Tangedco Circle, said that the inflow into Upper Bhavani reservoir was around 5,500 cusecs, while it was more than 7,000 cusecs in Avalanche.

Evacuated

Villages close to the banks of the rivers were alerted and evacuated on Monday night, and the sluice gates of the dams were opened on Tuesday morning.

All the 10 major dams in the Nilgiris, as well as Pilloor, are being monitored day and night by the Tangedco officials.

The sluice gates of the Pykara Dam too, which had a surplus of 700 cusecs of water, was opened on Tuesday morning, the officials added.

The Nilgiris district administration announced that the sluice gates of the Glenmorgan dam were opened at 5 p.m on Tuesday.

The administration stated that the people living in Masinagudi, Moyar and Theppakadu areas have been told to stay clear of the banks of the Moyar River. Officials said that Upper Bhavani and Avalanche continued to receive heavy rain till Tuesday evening, with rain gauge stations recording more than 208 mm rainfall in Upper Bhavani and 254 mm rainfall in Avalanche till Tuesday morning.
