THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Idukki dam is well equipped to contain excess water from Mullapperiyar dam if shutters of the same are to be raised in the event of an alarming increase of water level in Mullaperiyar dam, power minister M M Mani said while interacting with reporters here on Tuesday.

Tamil Nadu government had issued first warning alert to Idukki district collector after water level in Mullapperiyar dam crossed 136 ft. "If water from Mullapperiar is released, Idukki dam can very well contain the excess water. It’s depending on the ground conditions that we decide on the release of water from various dams, including Idukki. There is no need for panic," added KSEB chairman and Managing director N S Pillai.

The minister said there was no truth in the claims that there were lapses on the part of KSEB in opening Idukki and other dams."It’s after meticulous preparations and planning that KSEB is dealing the rain related emergencies. It’s easy for the so called intellectuals to make arguments. Things are different in the ground zero. KSEB officials are doing their best," he said.

In a veiled attack against Wayanad collector, M M Mani said KSEB would find out whether there were any lapses on the part of KSEB officials in connection with the water releasing from Banasurasagar dam. "If there was lapses, we would probe. But we won’t be making open accusations as done by the Wayanad collector," he said. There were allegations that the shutters of Banasurasagar dam were opened without giving proper intimation to district administration.
