Stocks end with loss, but off session lows

Stocks fell Wednesday as worries about the potential fallout from emerging market woes continued to weigh and retail and energy shares came under pressure. The S&P 500 SPX, -0.76% lost 0.8% to end near 2,818.37, according to preliminary figures, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA, -0.54% ended around 137.51 points lower near 25,162.41, a loss of 0.5%. The Nasdaq Composite COMP, -1.23% shed 1.2% to end near 7,774.12. The energy sector was the biggest decliner, dropping 3.5% as oil futures fell to a 10-week low following a surprise jump in U.S. crude inventories. The consumer-discretionary sector fell 1.2%. Department-store retailer Macy's Inc. M, -15.95% fell 16% after second-quarter earnings and sales beat Wall Street forecasts but was unable to overcome worries over its market share.
