Reservoirs fill up as rain intensifies

Coimbatore district records a total rainfall of 530.60 mm

Torrential rain in Coimbatore, the Nilgiris and Tirupur districts continue to fill up various reservoirs, leading to even a flood alert along River Bhavani as water is being released from the Pilloor Reservoir for the fourth time in three months. And, surplus water was released from the Amaravathy reservoir for the third time in a month.

Coimbatore reported a total rainfall of 530.60 mm. The average rainfall was 44.22 mm in the last 24 hours that ended at 8.30 a.m. on Tuesday.

Heavy inflow into the Pilloor reservoir led to the authorities releasing more than 20,000 cusecs into the Bhavani. And, with the Bhavani in spate, the storage in Bhavani Sagar reservoir near Sathyamangalam in Erode is also increasing.

The water level is expected to touch the full reservoir level (FRL) of 100 ft any time from now.

The water level in Sholayar reservoir was 163.40 ft (FRL 160 ft). The inflow was 6146.53 cusecs and discharge 4996.99 cusecs. The catchment recorded 165 mm rain.

The situation at the other reservoirs: Parambikulam: water level 70.30 ft (FRL 72 ft), inflow 5,451 cusecs, discharge 5,029 cusecs, rainfall 72 mm; Aliyar: water level 118.50 ft (FRL120 ft), inflow 2,637 cusecs, discharge 2,394 cusecs, rainfall 1.6 mm; Thirumurthy: water level 50 ft (FRL 60 ft), inflow 976 cusecs, discharge 863 cusecs, rainfall 1 mm; Amaravarathy: water level 87.96 ft (FRL 90 ft), inflow 2,966 cusecs, discharge was 2,935 cusecs.
