14-year-old running to be Vermont governor

ROUGH CUT (NO REPORTER NARRATION) 14-year-old Ethan Sonneborn is one of four Democrats vying to be the gubernatorial nominee in the Vermont race on Tuesday.

He is able to run because the state has no minimum age requirements to run for governor, just that the candidate has to have lived in the state for four years.

Sonneborn, who is from the Vermont city of Bristol, is the first minor to run for governor.

He supports a carbon tax, higher minimum wage and a worker's bill of rights.

He is a strong supporter of Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders. "I think my campaign transcends age," Sonneborn said. "I want people to think of me as a pragmatic progressive who happens to be 14." He said the biggest challenge he faces being a minor is that he can't drive.

He said he always been interested in politics from a young age and wanted to run after "reaching a boiling point" with state and national politics following the deadly clashes in Charlottesville, Virginia last year.

He said his biggest frustration with Vermont Governor Phil Scott is his inconsistent leadership. "I think his leadership style is either obstructionist or it's too easy-going," Sonneborn said.

He will begin freshman year of high school in a few weeks, but is still unable to vote.
