5-year-old boy going to school run over by car in Mumbai suburb

A five-year-old boy who was walking on the footpath on his way to school was mowed by a speeding car coming out of a housing society in Kandivli (East) around noon on Tuesday. The driver of the vehicle has been arrested.

Samta Nagar police said the incident took place around 11:45am outside New Gokul Garden society on the 90-feet road.

Arush Mishra,the victim, was a resident of Jai Ambe chawl in Poisar. Arush and his 10-year-old brother studied in a private school that is at walking distance from their residence.

On Tuesday, Arush was being dropped to school by his mother and they were walking on the footpath when a car suddenly came out of the society’s gate and mowed him down.

The car ran over Arush’s head. He was taken to a private hospital and was declared dead around 12:45pm due to grievous head injuries.

The police are scouring the CCTV cameras that are installed near the society’s gate to ascertain how the incident took place. They have arrested Jasmitsingh Suri, 40, who was driving the car and was heading out with his wife. The police said he works in a private firm.

Suri has been booked under sections 279 (Rash driving or riding on a public way) and 304 A (Causing death by negligence) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) for rash and negligent driving causing death.

Senior police inspector Raju Kasbe of Samta Nagar police station said the accused was not in an inebriated condition.
