37 fresh cases of malaria reported last week

With 37 fresh cases of malaria reported last week, the number of cases have reached to 244 this year, according to a report released by South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC) on Monday. However, out of these, 109 cases belonged to neighbouring States.

According to Dr Atul Kakkar, Vice Chairman, Department of Medicine, Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, with the Capital already seeing a significant rise in the cases of malaria this year, the threat of post-monsoon diseases such as cholera, typhoid and diarrhea are also rising.

“These diseases are basically respiratory, intestinal and vector borne diseases. We generally see 40 to 50 per cent rise in these cases during the period of three to four months starting in August,” he said.

According to SDMC, a total of 50,614 blood slide examination of malaria parasites have been done in dispensaries, malaria clinics and city hospitals run by corporations and Delhi Government, it stated. The blood examination was carried out by all three corporations were - north corporation (13,580), SDMC (15,207) and East Delhi Municipal Corporation (EDMC) -9,562. According to the report, 140 cases of dengue and 87 of chikungunya have also been reported till August 11.
