Kandasamy says the government is determined to enforce the ban on plastics

Minister for Social Welfare M. Kandasamy has convened a high-level official meeting on Tuesday to review the functioning of plastic industrial units.

He told presspersons, after conducting a surprise inspection of a unit at Andiyarpalayam on Monday, that a meeting would be held to streamline the functioning of plastic industrial units.

Mr. Kandasamy, who also holds the Environment portfolio, had been making surprise inspections to see whether the industrial units were following the government decision to ban manufacture and sale of plastics with thickness of less than 50 microns. Last week, he had ordered the sealing of a unit after it was found manufacturing plastics of less than 50 microns thickness.

He said the ban would be implemented at any cost. The Minister inspected a Scheduled Caste hostel at Madagadipet. He expressed his displeasure over the quality of food supplied and directed the authorities concerned to adopt corrective steps.

To a question on Port operations, the Minister said a qualified person would soon be selected for the post of Port Director. Six applications had been received for the post, he added.
