Currencies fall amid fears of lira contagion

Markets have fallen and the lira has dropped to new lows despite attempts by Turkey’s central bank to halt the ongoing crisis. The currency fell as much as 11% to 7.24 lira to the US dollar yesterday with the Mexican peso, South Africa’s rand and the Indian rupee also down amid fears of contagion. The lira has sunk more than 40% against the dollar this year.

Rail fare hike of 3.5% expected in January

Millions of commuters are expected to face a 3.5% rise in rail fares from January. The next hike will be announced on Wednesday when official inflation figures for July are released. This year rail fares rose by 3.6% - the biggest leap for five years. Which magazine recently found rail firms are the second least-trusted industry in the UK.

Sainsbury's trials first checkout-free store

Sainsbury's is testing its first "till-free" store, reports the BBC. Shoppers are not required to queue for a staffed or self-service checkout. Instead they scan goods with a smartphone and when they have finished shopping, their payment is processed by the phone. The trial is in the Clapham North Sainsbury's Local, open to iPhone users who have Apple Pay set up on their device.

Anger as Ashley makes limited offer to suppliers

Mike Ashley’s Sports Direct has pledged to pay suppliers and concessionaires to House of Fraser only for goods sold since Friday, when it took over the department chain. This means suppliers and concessionaires could be out of pocket by tens of millions of pounds, and some suppliers could be forced into receivership. Some are owed £70m.

Aristocrat claims €351m from France over Monaco

A French-born aristocrat is demanding that the French state pay him €351m in damages, claiming that it conned his relatives out of succeeding to the throne of Monaco. Count Louis de Causans alleges that early in the 20th Century France changed the succession rules to thwart a German claim to the throne. He told Le Parisien that it was a matter of family honour to rectify the "trickery".
