NEW DELHI: Online users were left bemused when Congress president
Rahul Gandhi, who has often been accused of 'nepotism' by Prime Minister
Narendra Modi, said that there is a one-family rule in Telangana.
"Today, in Telangana, there is a one-family rule. Entire benefit is going to one family. Lands are snatched from farmers, women SHGs are not helped, farmers are not being assisted and there is corruption. The situation is same here and in Delhi," he said targeting both the TRS and BJP-led NDA governments. The Congress president was addressing members of the women self-help groups (SHGs) on the first day of his two-day visit to Hyderabad.
The Congress leader's comments left the online community bewildered.
"A self-made Rahul Gandhi has shaken the TRS government to the core with his comment," said a Twitter user.
"One finger pointing at others, four pointing at himself!" another Twitter user said.
One online user took the opportunity to reignite the debate on leadership inside the Congress party.
"How will it hurt if some non-dynasty leaders also became Congress president once in a while? Why not at least rotate the Congress presidency?" he asked.
In the past, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has often targeted the Congress president for trampling democratic practices within his own party.
In July, during the no-trust motion against his government, the Prime Minister had said that the Congress party had misused the no-confidence motions to spread instability in the country to ensure that the Gandhi family remains in power.
In June, slamming Congress and the Gandhi family on the 43rd anniversary of imposition of Emergency, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that India was "turned into a jail for the selfish personal interests" of that family.
"Emergency is a black spot on the golden history of the nation. Observing black day is not just to criticise the Congress for its sin of imposing Emergency but also to create an awareness for the protection of Constitution and democracy," Modi said.
Lashing out at Congress for "spreading illusionary fear" about the Constitution, Dalits and minorities facing danger (in the BJP-led regime), Modi said Congress can never improve. "For the promotion of self-interest, they destroyed their own party," he said.
