GURUGRAM: Burglars made off with cash, jewellery and imported liquor amounting to lakhs from the
Sector 49 residence of former state minister Kanta Devi. Devi, who lives with her husband in the sector’s
Uppal Southend, is currently in the US.
Devi served as minister for animal husbandry in the former
Bansi Lal government. Later, she was environment minister in the
Om Prakash Chautala regime. She has been living in Gurugram for several decades now, and is away on a visit to her son, who is settled in the US, at present.
Jitender Kumar, Devi’s brother in-law, told cops that he is taking
care of the house in their absence. “I locked up the house on Saturday and went to Bhiwani. When I returned to check the house on Sunday evening, I opened the lock on the front door to find that it was locked from the inside,” Kumar said in his complaint to police.
“The burglars made away with Rs 25,000 and around 1,000 US dollars in cash kept in the almirah and silverware weighing a total of 2kg. They also took away six bottles of imported liquor and a few clothes,” Kumar said.
On the basis of his complaint, an FIR was registered against unidentified persons under Section 380 (theft in dwelling house) of the IPC on Sunday at Sector 50 police station. “The accused entered the house after breaking a grille on the back side of the house,” a police officer from Sector 50 police station said.
