Imphal: 10-day pineapple festival to encourage farmers

Thayong, a remote village in Manipur’s Imphal, organised a 10-day pineapple festival aimed at encouraging farmers and locals to plant and cultivate pineapples. The Thayong village has a population of approximately 750 people with more than 90 percent of their major sources of income lying in farming of pineapple. The farmers would get an opportunity to showcase different varieties of pineapples grown in the area, boosting the economy of pineapple growers of the area, through the pineapple festival. It is also expected that agro-tourism would get a boost through such events as the region is blessed with abundant varieties of herbs and medicinal plants.
