The Gold Coast Bulletin reports that there’s a private offer for an integrated resort on the south end of the Coast worth $2 billion.
It’s pitched as a state of the art venture that would have provision for three cruise ships, a hotel, casino and giant wave pool.
Council has greeted the application with open arms but mentioned it’s unlikely to be approved.
In spite of this, the Mayor still explains that there’s room for a terminal on the Coast.
“We’ve got the opportunity to enter the cruise ship tourism market, that’s worth billions of dollars, we should do so,” he said.
He further added the proposal at Tugun would get in the way with the current World Surfing Reserve and that internationally famous breaks should be left to the surfers.
The location had been floated before and the Mayor stated that it only took 48 hours for Council and the then Newman Government to refuse the plan.
Council is still in the process of considering their new proposal.
“The location that we’ve looked at on Phillip Park is superior it’s close to the light rail, it’s close to tourists,” Cr Tate said.
“People can get off and get to Surfers Paradise, Southport and Broadbeach… It’s a great location.”
The State Government is doubtful in reviewing the new plan until at least July 2019.
