ULB chief directs civic body to collect garbage every day

Taking note of a complaint raised by Gurugram resident Trilok Gupta on the tardy door-to-door waste collection service, the Directorate of Urban Local Bodies (ULB) in Panchkula directed the commissioner of the Municipal Corporation of Gurugram (MCG) to take remedial action.

The August 6 letter, signed by a sub-divisional engineer, under the aegis of the ULB Director General, Haryana, comes over a month after Gupta complained of poor waste collection in the Gandhi Nagar area in Ward 22.

“You are requested to take action in this regard and send report to Directorate,” the ULB letter states.

Gupta first raised the issue on July 3, after which MCG joint commissioner Vivek Kalia forwarded his complaint to the ULB. “I tried calling on Ecogreen’s toll-free number before writing to the authorities, but it didn’t do the trick. The day I complained, they sent a truck to collect waste from my area, but since then collection has again become irregular,” Gupta said.

Ecogreen is the MCG’s concessionaire for waste management in the city.

Similar complaints about irregular waste collection have also been made by residents in DLF 1, sectors 27, 28 and 29.

Last week, Ward 34 councillor SS Rathee issued a note to the media, highlighting negligence in door-to-door collection of garbage in the locality. “The garbage collector does not come to people’s houses for two to three days in a row,” Rathee stated, adding that this leads to open dumping in the area.

A spot check by a Hindustan Times team on Monday revealed that open dumping is prevalent in two major spots—near the Chakkarpur powerhouse in Sector 28 and near the police station in Sector 29.

Ecogreen CEO Ankit Aggarwal had earlier responded to Rathee’s allegations, saying that no complaints had been received by the company. “When enquired with the estate team, the work was found to be satisfactory which can be independently verified,” he said. 

However, on Monday, Ecogreen officials and MCG commissioner Yashpal Yadav did not respond to repeated requests for a comment on the directive.
