MUMBAI: A 36-year-old serial
sex offender was sentenced on Tuesday to
life imprisonment for raping and having
unnatural sex with a 13-year-old schoolgirl in 2014.
Special judge
M A Baraliya said that Ayaz Ansari will remain in jail for the remainder of his natural life.
With Ansari convicted in earlier cases too, the prosecution wanted charges under IPC section 376E (punishment for repeat offenders) against him.
Special public prosecutor Geeta Sharma sought the maximum sentence of death under the law. On April 7, 2014, the girl told the court she was walking home from school, when Ansari accosted her and asked her to follow him on the pretext of giving his mobile number to her father.
After some distance, he forced himself on her. The child said that when she resisted, Ansari assaulted her and abused her. After he left, she met a watchman and confided in him. He called her father, who arrived with the police. Based on the child’s description, which included a distinct eye deformity, a sketch was made of the accused and he was nabbed.
Sharma examined 12 witnesses in the case, including cops and the headmistress of the school.
The father, who also deposed as a witness, identified the sketch in court as the same one shown to him by the police. He described how he received a call from a person who had called him on the day of the incident about his child being “beaten” up by someone.
He further said when he met his daughter, she narrated the details of the sexual assault.
