The darker side of Velachery Main Road

more-in

The streetlights dont “shine”on a busy stretch of Velachery Main Road, from Tambaram East to Medavakkam Koot Road junction. Due to their “poor performance”, motorists are now at a greater risk for accidents, after sunset.

Right from East Tambaram, only a few streetlights burn. And near the East Tambaram bus terminus, lamp-posts have to be re-located towards the carriageway as the stretch has been widened.

Lights from commercial establishments on a stretch from Camp Road to Selaiyur are the only saving grace.

R. Krishna, a resident of Camp Road, says, “The arterial stretch connects Medavakkam-Perumbakkam-Sholinganallur Road and provides access to Rajiv Gandhi Salai and East Coast Road.

After sunset, motorists heading towards IT Corridor from this section of Velachery Main Road find it very difficult to negotiate it. Motorists are forced to turn on the high-beam lights, which makes things difficult for motorists coming in the opposite direction.”
