HUBBALLI: Inaugurating the taluk court complex here on Sunday, Chief Justice of India Dipak Misra stepped into a Special Lok Adalat hearing and mediated between a couple who had filed for divorce.

The couple married in 2000 and has four children – two daughters and two sons. Citing mental cruelty, the husband filed for divorce in a Hubballi family court in 2012. He alleged that his wife was not willing to live with his mother and was pressuring him to move out. This amounted to cruelty, he said.

Advocate for the husband SK Kayakamath said the matter was referred to the Lok Adalat as there were signs of reconciliation over the years. At Sunday’s hearing, Justice Misra told the couple a story and asked them to lead a happy life together, said the advocate.

The CJI said a young woman was reluctant to enter wedlock fearing the consequences. Listening to her fears, her mother said she should look at her parents who had been married for 28 years and were leading a happy life together. The secret of a happy conjugal life is to enjoy every day without expecting too much, the CJI said. He also urged the couple to unite for the sake of their young children.

The hearing lasted 12 minutes but the couple seemed to have got the final nudge they needed to reconsider divorce. They left miling and hand in hand, said the lawyer.
