Heavy rain in Horanadu and surrounding areas has resulted in an increase in inflow into the Tungabhadra dam, Hosapete. As a result, 68,000 cusecs of water was released from TB Dam on Saturday evening, inundating important monuments of Hampi and other places along the
Tungabhadra river.
Though Hampi received average rainfall this time, heavy rain in the catchment areas of Tungabhadra river across Malnad, led to a rise in the water level in TB Dam. It is the second time that monuments have been submerged due to
release of water in the past month.
Vishwanath Malagi, a guide in Hampi, said most of the important monuments, including Navabrindavan, Narahari Theertar Brindavan, Purandardasara Mantap, Kotilingeshwara temple and Mahalaxmi temple were submerged.
He said the only way to reach Kodandaram temple is under water and there is no connectivity. Tourists from across the state and other parts of the country are visiting Hampi in this season too, but are restricted from going close to the Tungabhadra river area, where some monuments are submerged, he added.
Copious rain in Malnad, Sringeri and other Tungabhadra river catchment areas, is pushing up water level in TB Dam. Authorities opened 22 crest gates of the dam to release 68,000 cusecs of water.
