In a relief to Mumbaikars travelling towards South Mumbai via Haji Ali Junction, they will soon get a flyover to decongest traffic at Haji Ali. The Brihanmunbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) will soon float tenders for the one kilometre-long flyover.

According to Hindustan Times, this flyover has been in BMC’s pipeline for over a decade. The BMC has finished working on the general arrangement drawings of the flyover, which will be put up for approval next week. The flyover will connect south-bound traffic from Lala Lajpat Rai Road and E Moses Road directly to Peddar Road and Breach Candy.

Vijay Singhal, additional municipal commissioner (AMC) told the leading daily, “The heavy influx of vehicles entering the city is the major reason behind traffic jams at Haji Ali Junction. The project will get a boost once the drawings are sanctioned. This flyover will have two arms at the start and two arms in the end. Since it will be a one-way corridor, vehicles exiting South Mumbai will have to continue taking the existing road.”

The flyover to ease congestion at Haji Ali junction was first conceived in 2006. However, it was stalled due to strong opposition by local residents, including singer Lata Mangeshkar. If the project goes according to plan, it could clear 70% of the traffic congestion at Haji Ali Junction.
