LUCKNOW: The ongoing Metro construction has drastically changed the experience of going to Hazratganj, the state capital's upscale market housing various showrooms, shopping complexes, restaurants, hotels and offices. The fabled, leisurely evening walk across Hazratganj, starting from Halwasiya up to the coffee house is not that gratifying, rather impossible, nowadays.

The wait for pollution-free, air-conditioned rides and relief from road traffic jams in Metro is becoming a bit tiresome now, with the hardships caused by the construction making it very difficult to endure. People visiting Hazratganj complain that driving on the barricaded, uneven roads with several potholes is extremely difficult. Since MG Marg and Hazratganj have many stores, shops, offices and schools, there are always long traffic jams because of broken roads. Even the road next to barricade is so uneven and narrow that people get injured in accidents.

Most commuters, with whom TOI interacted, complained that the roads are being dug up but are not restored properly. "I face a lot of trouble commuting through this road daily. They have cut roads and filled them up unevenly. It is either raised above road level or is a depression. Riding over them is like crossing a speedbreaker," said A K Tyagi, a resident of Halwasiya.

"The stretch is highly unsafe for cyclists and pedestrians as motorists lose control on rough, uneven road. I have seen metro construction in Delhi but it was never this kind of mess," said Kanika Jethwani, a resident of Hazratganj complained .

Similar chaos was noticed near Metro construction site at Burlington crossing.

The traffic moves slow because of several rough patches near Akashwani office and OCR building. "I met an accident recently and fractured two of my fingers. Now, I avoid taking this road and take a long detour instead," said Gagan Maurya, a resident of Hussainganj.
