Revenue Minister E. Chandrasekharan, who held a review meeting with Revenue Department officers here on Monday, said Kozhikode district suffered a loss of ₹228 crore in the recent floods and landslips.
The Minister said a detailed estimate would be prepared soon.
“For the families who lost both their houses and land at Kannappankundu and Karinchola landslips, the government would grant a rehabilitation aid of ₹10 lakh. Those who lost their house alone would get a compensation of ₹4 lakh,” he said. He also promised an individual assistance of ₹3,500 to all families who were shifted to relief camps.
Pointing out the need for more financial support from the Central government, the Minister said the total loss faced by the State amounted to ₹8,316 crore and that the State was in need of at least ₹1,220 crore to meet the emergency needs.
“Though the already sanctioned ₹100 crore was insufficient, we hope to get more as Union Minister Rajnath Singh has taken stock of the situation,” he said.
During his discussions with Revenue Department officials, the Minister lauded the efforts taken by the district administration by dividing the district into seven zones and adopting more effective relief measures under the leadership of Deputy Collectors.
He also appreciated the commendable service by rescue squads.
District Collector U.V. Jose, Sub Collector V. Vignewsari, Assistant Collector K.S. Anju, Additional District Magistrate T. Janil Kumar, Vadakara Revenue Divisional officer V.P. Abdul Rahiman and Deputy Collectors in-charge of various zones were present at the meeting.
Officials said the district now has 12 relief camps under Thamarassery, Vadakara, Koyilandy and Kozhikode taluks, accommodating 1,028 people.
Following landslip threat, a few more families were shifted to relief camps at Kannappankundu in Puthuppady panchayat on Monday. Residents in the area said they were shifted after noticing strange cracks on land.
