Man killed in Sydney's west was 'just out walking'

Police say a 31-year-old man who died after an assault in Sydney's south-west was "just out walking" when he was set upon in a "vicious" and "targeted" attack.

Emergency services rushed Morison Drive and Hill Road, Lurnea, about 4.45pm on Sunday after police received several reports of two men fighting.

Officers found a man with serious head injuries and began CPR. He was treated by NSW Ambulance paramedics and taken to Liverpool Hospital, but later died.

Police announced on Monday that they are searching for two men who they believe drove the offender to the scene of the incident, and left with him after the assault.

The men were travelling in a white Toyota four-wheel-drive with a distinct tray and distinct tyre rims.

"It's a very tragic set of circumstances for this young man and his family," acting Superintendent Paul Albury of Liverpool City Police Area Command said in a statement to the media.

"So we're continuing to speak to a number of witnesses and canvassing up the scene for CCTV footage at the moment."

Police believe they have identified the person responsible for the attack, and are confident he will hand himself in for the matter to be resolved later on Monday.

Acting Superintendent Albury said that the alleged offender and the victim had a "considerable history" between them that "dates back some substantial years".

"It certainly was a vicious attack and it was certainly, in our view, a targeted attack on a specific person," he said.

"This was not something that was a random attack on the street."

Police are urging anyone with information, or who may have seen the attack, to come forward.
