KOLKATA: The New Town Kolkata Development Authority (NKDA) has extended the deadline for owners of residential and educational property to pay the first quarter of unit area assessment-based property tax by another month till September 2. Failing to pay within the deadline, they will be slapped with a penalty of 30% of the amount. Owners of property under all other categories, including commercial, who have missed the August 2 deadline, can submit their tax till September 2 but with a penalty of 10%.NKDA authorities have earned about Rs 24 crore from property tax, since the new UAA based system was introduced on April 2. Officials said earlier, the last date of self-assessment and submission of property tax for the first quarter was set for June 2. But the deadline was extended till August 2 following requests from several property owners, living abroad or outside the state, stating they needed some more time to learn about the new UAA-based system. However, with similar requests syill coming in, the authorities have further extended the deadline to September 2.
NKDA officials said overall tax collection had been satisfactory, given property owners in New Town started paying only from April. “The response has been positive,” said an official.
