An alcoholic man allegedly stabbed a staff member of a drug de-addiction centre to death in west Delhi’s Khyala on Sunday night.

The police said that a team from the centre had gone to the addict’s house to pick him up, after his family approached the centre for help. Senior police officers said that efforts to arrest the man, who is on the run, are underway.

The police have identified the deceased as Harsh, an employee of the drug de-addiction centre based in east Delhi’s Ganesh Nagar. Senior officers said that they are yet to ascertain if the accused is a minor.

According to the police, on Sunday evening, three men from the drug de-addiction centre arrived at the man’s house in west Delhi’s Khyala. “When the team was trying to make the accused sit in their vehicle, he protested. A scuffle broke out. As the three staff members tried to overpower the man, he took out a knife and stabbed Harsh. When Harsh started bleeding, the man fled,” a senior police officer, not authorised to speak to the media, said.

Locals then called the police and Harsh was rushed to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival. “Efforts to trace the accused are underway and a case of murder has been registered,” the officer said.

Deputy commissioner of police (west) Vijay Kumar could not be contacted for comment despite repeated attempts.
