Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) student Umar Khalid was shot at by an unidentified man outside the Constitution Club of India in New Delhi, today afternoon, according to media reports.
Khalid, who arrived at the club to attend a discussion titled Towards a Freedom Without Fear, is unhurt, ANI reported.
After surviving the attack, Khalid said, "There is an atmosphere of fear in the country, and anybody who speaks against the government is threatened."
As per one eyewitness account, a man in a white shirt shot at Khalid.
"We were at a tea stall when a man in a white shirt came, pushed and opened fire at him. Khalid lost his balance, fell down and the bullet missed him. We tried to catch the man but he fled. He fired aerial shots and the pistol slipped out of his hands," the eyewitness said.
Fellow JNU student activist tweeted that she had spoken with Khalid after the attack. "He's okay, but we should be very very worried about his safety," she said in her tweet.
Khalid, in June, lodged a police complaint claiming that he had received threats from Ravi Pujari, an Indian gangster.
